The Penyo Penev Town Library
Dimitrovgrad in Haskovo, BulgariaThe Penyo Penev Town Library was opened on July 12, 1953. Initially, 5000 books of donations from libraries, businesses, public organizations and citizens not only from the city but from the whole country served as a basis for her book fund.
From the archives of the library for the first years, it is clear that it is "the center of lively exchange of books and cultural and educational work with the young people - the most numerous inhabitants of the city".
To expand its activities, on November 20, 1957, the library opened a branch in the Vassil Kolarov neighborhood, supported mobile libraries in the companies an asset of pickers. Starts regular and regular collection of books, periodicals, graphics, and other types of publications. The City Library searches, stores, and provides rigorous information for use. It becomes an archive of local periodicals. All this is an indicator of its continued recognition as a leading cultural and educational institute.
In 1969, the City Library was housed in a new, specially designed building, and thus it became possible to provide differentiated service to readers. In 1994 a Summer Reading Room was opened and functioned in the courtyard of the library, which provides very good conditions for reading and relaxation.
1999 marks the beginning of the automation of library processes in the library with a computer for processing newly acquired literature. Currently, all library processes are automated. An automated library network with 11 workstations and 13 consumer PCs for readers has been built. Internet with unlimited access is installed. Databases of books, articles, periodicals, publications, graphics, and electronic information carriers. The fund has 218,000 library units.
The library participates in national and international library projects. It is one of the 18 libraries involved in the ABLE-American-Bulgarian Library Project, sponsored by the US Department of Science.
Under the "Global Libraries - Bulgaria" Program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the cultural institution receives 12 computer configurations for library users.
The library organizes cultural events with a specific public response. Traditional participation in the organization of "Dimitrovgrad Days of Poetry" - publication of bibliographical references for the winner of the National Literary Prize "Penyo Penev" and the International Literary Prize in the name of the poet, hosting the meeting of the laureates with citizens and guests of the city.
All important dates and events in the public life of the city and the country are celebrated by organizing exhibitions, meetings with prominent artists of science and culture, presentation of new books by local authors and authors of national significance. It works in cooperation with schools, other cultural institutes in the city and local communities. The library is a collective member of the Bulgarian Library and Information Association.
With all its activities, Penyo Penev - Dimitrovgrad city library proves its position - a modern, public information and cultural center.
