Medieval fortress, village of Klokotnitsa, Asenova Mahala quarter
village of Klokotnitsa in Haskovo, BulgariaIt was here, however, that on 9 March 1230 Tsar Ivan Asen II defeated the armies of the Byzantine Emperor Theodore Komnenos. This victory played a key role in the expansion of Bulgaria and its access to three seas - the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea and the Adriatic.
This fortress rose on a sharp hill with a height of 387 m, precisely at the intersection of the two tributaries of the rivers, i.e. the place where the battle is believed to have taken place. Unfortunately, almost nothing has survived from the wall, only the medieval walls are quite visible.
However, the view from the hill is beautiful, there are 2 gazebos and fountains along the eco trail leading to the fortress, and the place is of great importance for Bulgaria's history."
