Fossilized Forest of Lefkimi and Fylakto
Fossilized Forest of Lefkimi and Fylakto - the oldest fossil forest of Greece is located in Evros and its findings, such as a 20-meter trunk, reach even 40,000,000 years old. The fossilized forest of Lefkimi is located in the area that includes the village of the same name and the Amulet of the municipality of Soufli. It is located 45 km from Alexandroupolis and 6 km from Tychero which was formerly the municipal center. It was formed due to the favorable fossil conditions and is directly related to the volcanic activity that existed in the area 25,000,000 years ago. This volcanic activity created hot solutions rich in silicon dioxide that penetrated the volcanic rocks in which the tree trunks were already located and thus began the process of fossilization, ie the molecular replacement of organic plant matter by minerals. In the case of the fossilized forest of the wider area, the fossilization is perfect. The external morphological features of the tree trunks are preserved in excellent condition, e.g. the growth rings, the bark as well as the internal structure of the wood from the microscopic study, which determines the genus and the type of the fossilized tree. When you visit it you can admire the Trunk of 20 meters which is the oldest in Greece, with an age of about 40 million years. Near the village is the fossil oak 19 meters long and 25 million years old.
